In many cases, yes. Utility rebate programs like Consumers Energy's Business Energy Efficiency Program cover 100% of the project cost for qualifying facilities. We audit your space, determine eligibility, and handle all paperwork. If the rebate covers the full cost, your out-of-pocket is $0.

Which utility rebate programs do you work with?

We work with eight Michigan utility rebate programs: Consumers Energy, DTE Energy, Lansing BWL, Grand Haven Board of Light & Power, Indiana Michigan Power (I&M / AEP), Traverse City Light & Power, Holland Board of Public Works, and Energy Smart (co-ops and municipal utilities). Each has a different incentive structure — we determine which applies to your facility and maximize your rebate.

What types of fixtures qualify for rebate-funded retrofits?

Accepted Answer

Most legacy lighting qualifies: T12 and T8 fluorescent tubes, metal halide high bays, HPS fixtures, CFL downlights, halogen spots, and more. The key requirement is that the replacement products are DLC-qualified or ENERGY STAR certified.

How long does the rebate process take?

Accepted Answer

From initial audit to completed installation is typically 2–4 weeks. Rebate processing by the utility company takes an additional 4–8 weeks after installation. We front the rebate amount so you don't wait to start saving.

Do I need to shut down my business during installation?

Accepted Answer

No. We schedule installations during off-hours or work section-by-section to minimize disruption. Most facilities remain fully operational throughout the project.

Question 6

Can I do the LED upgrade myself instead of using a trade ally?

Accepted Answer

You can, but it will cost you more. As a certified trade ally, Leader Lights qualifies for significantly higher rebate incentive rates than individual businesses can access directly. The utility programs are designed to channel the largest incentives through vetted trade allies — so your net cost through us is typically lower than a DIY approach, even before factoring in licensed labor.

We lease our building — can we still qualify for rebate-funded LEDs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many of our retrofit projects are in leased commercial and industrial spaces. The rebate is tied to the utility meter and facility, not ownership. Building owners typically welcome the upgrade since it reduces operating costs and improves property value. We can provide documentation to help you get landlord authorization.

What if the rebate funding runs out before our project starts?

Accepted Answer
